Guide Our Path
“For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory . . . The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”
Psalms 32:7-8 NLT
“Blessed are we who cannot go on . . .
Not like this,
But stand and look and ask,
Which is the good way to walk in?
Is there an easier route?
Blessed are we who listen
For the voice that is both
Thunder and softest rain.”
—“for when the road is long,”
(Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie. “The Lives We Actually Have: 100 Blessings for Imperfect Days”)
It’s hard to know what to do in different paths in life, where each decision and season and outside forces will take us. When we don’t know how to add good to a painful and sad world. The good news is that God is with us on every road. He promises to guide us. To be with us when we aren’t sure “which is the good way.” To help us to know how we can help others, how we can add good to the world, how we can stand against systems that harm others.
The Lord can be our hiding place, a safe presence to talk through any decisions with. He knows the hard roads we’ve already walked. God knows the good, joyful results of paths we will walk in darkness through. Let us seek God’s advice and also know we are empowered to make big decisions in our lives, trusting God can turn out things for good. Trusting that small good things we do right now can have big effects on the people around us, on the neighbors we are called to love and care for.
Reflect: Where do you feel like you need guidance? Where do you feel called to show love and kindness to your neighbors?
Pray: Lord God, help us to know the good way to walk in. Be present with us so we can talk with you about all the decisions we need to make today, in the next week, soon. Help us to live our lives in ways that obey your teachings. May we hear your voice. Thank you for caring about all of these things in our lives. Advise us and watch over us. Amen.
May you feel God’s presence with you,
