Joy That Magnifies

My First paragraph with bold text.

Day 16  Joy that Magnifies God

Luke 1:46-55, CEB  46 Mary said, “With all my heart I glorify the Lord!  47 In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior.  48 He has looked with favor on the low status of his servant.    Look! From now on, everyone will consider me highly favored  49 because the mighty one has done great things for me.  Holy is his name.  50 He shows mercy to everyone,    from one generation to the next,    who honors him as God.  51 He has shown strength with his arm.    He has scattered those with arrogant thoughts and proud inclinations.  52 He has pulled the powerful down from their thrones    and lifted up the lowly.  53 He has filled the hungry with good things    and sent the rich away empty-handed.  54 He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,    remembering his mercy,  55 just as he promised to our ancestors,    to Abraham and to Abraham’s descendants forever.”     Mary's song bursts with joy that changes everything. When she learns she'll bear the Messiah, her response isn't quiet gratitude, but rather, it's explosive praise. "My soul magnifies the Lord," she declares, making God bigger in her sight and ours.

This is joy at its heart: not joy that’s rooted in our circumstances but in God's character and action. Mary rejoices because God sees the lowly, remembers mercy, and keeps promises. She's young, poor, and unmarried, hardly an ideal situation, yet God chooses her. This reveals prevenient grace that comes before we deserve it, transforming us from the inside out.

Mary's joy magnifies God by showing who God is. The powerful are scattered. The humble are lifted. The hungry are fed. God's kingdom turns the world upside down, and Mary sees herself caught up in this redemptive work.

Our Advent calling is Mary's calling: to let joy magnify God in our lives. When we celebrate God's grace, mercy, and justice, we make Him visible to a watching world. Like Mary, we don't manufacture this joy through willpower, it wells up as we recognize God's faithful presence in our lives, working out His extraordinary purposes.

Reflect: Where do you see God working in unexpected ways this Advent?

Pray: Heavenly Father, like Mary, let my soul magnify You today. Let this remind me to see Your faithful work in my life. Fill me with joy that points others to Your mercy and grace. In Christ Jesus, Amen.
